QR Codes in Thailand

Next week I head to Thailand (and Laos) and I’m going to use it as a bit of research project into QR Codes. It’s not Japan obviously but QR codes are suposedly a lot more popular in Asia than in my local country of Australia.

I googled ‘qr codes thailand’ and found some interesting articles. BeQRious has an article entitled ‘QR Code Thunders Through Thailand‘ (image to left sourced from there) explaining how TrueMove is pushing the use of barcodes. Another article, Bribing customers to use mobile barcodes: smart move from TrueMove, puts it like this: anyone who “installs the app will get a 10 Baht top up for free”. I’ll leave it up to you if you think it’s a bribe.

Oishi Green Tea are also putting qr codes on their packaging and according to this blog post, the qr codes link to an interactive game – “You use this code in the online game/contest to further progress and ultimately win prizes”. Very interesting concept indeed.

I’ll hopefully post some examples from my own research in the forthcoming weeks.

QR codes: The future of mobile media

QR Code for True BloodIn  a very interesting article entitled “QR codes: The Future of Mobile Media“, memeburn spoke to the designer, Philip Warbasse of Warbasse Design/Plush, of the code you see to the left – a QR Code ad campaign for the new True Blood series.

Some important points from the article:

Banksy’s QR Code

Banksy recently used a QR Code in one of his pieces to link to his Wikipedia page. It’s a great use of the technology for self-promotion and fits so well with his black and white style. A little bit surprised he didn’t customise it though

Another example of cool customisation.

Japan-based creative agency SET have produced this QR code for their work for Louis Vuitton and Takashi Murakami.

SET are probably the world leaders in QR Code customisation and have recently teamed up with Insqribe, an Australian-based company, to deliever QR campaigns.

Custom QR Code by Scanrr.com

We’ll soon be launching Scanrr.com – a QR Code generator and customisation site.

As a teaser, you’ll see one of our customised codes, which we’re calling ‘Scanrr Boy’.

The code links to Scanrr.com and we’ll be printing this and other codes onto t-shirts soon.

Let us know what you think in the comments section – would you like a t-shirt with a custom code on it like this??
